The Canning Recipes: Shepherd’s Pie in Jars

A complete comfort meal in a jar! Layers of seasoned meat, vegetables, and mashed potatoes make this a hearty dinner ready in minutes.

Ingredients (makes about 7 quarts)

  • 11 cups water
  • 2 packages beef stew mix
  • 1 package au jus gravy mix
  • Salt, pepper, and Montreal Steak Seasoning to taste
  • 5 pounds ground beef, seasoned, cooked, and drained
  • 1 large onion, peeled and diced
  • 4 large carrots, peeled and sliced
  • 3 cups corn (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 cups green peas (fresh or frozen)
  • 6 medium russet potatoes, peeled and diced

Instructions

  1. Cook the Meat and Vegetables In a large pot, combine the cooked ground beef, diced onion, sliced carrots, corn, and green peas. Add water, beef stew mix, au jus gravy mix, and seasonings. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  2. Prepare the Jars Layer the meat and vegetable mixture in clean quart jars. Top with diced potatoes. Add broth to fill, leaving 1-inch headspace.
  3. Process Wipe rims clean and apply lids and bands fingertip tight. Pressure can quarts at 15 pounds pressure for 90 minutes (adjust for altitude). Pints for 75 minutes.
  4. Cool and Store Let pressure drop naturally. Cool jars undisturbed for 12–24 hours. Check seals, label, and store in a cool, dark place.

To Serve:
Open the jar, heat thoroughly, and enjoy your Shepherd’s Pie — a full meal in minutes!

This is a wonderful make-ahead meal for busy families or emergency storage.
